The Way Things Are

Although the way to life is narrow, and there are few who find it (Matthew 7), we believe that having a Bible Based church with a clear message of repentance is essential.  To be good witnesses, Christians need to have high moral standards in our times–even when that isn’t very popular.  Sadly many “christians” are living very worldly and sinful lives.  Maybe it’s because they haven’t really repented of their sins.

For example I recently visited a large, popular, contemporary church in So. Cal.  The preacher was talking about confession and he gave a pretty good message.  But then he played a clip from a recent R-rated movie.  He mentioned that it was “hard to watch,” but it illustrated his main point of confession.  That got me curious.  When I went home I looked up some reviews of that movie.  The reviewers said that it had long scenes of complete nudity (minutes long at a time) along with depictions of drug abuse and fornication and the use of pornography along with other immoral material.  I don’t think any christian should be watching these kinds of films.  I wouldn’t say these kinds of movies are “hard to watch.”  Actually such movies are tempting to watch, but they are corrupting and poisonous for our souls.  Probably the minister was trying to “relate” to the people.  But Jesus wouldn’t want us to partake in sinful entertainment.

The fact is that most people don’t even go to church in our times.  That is a huge change from what America was like 200 years ago.  In 1776 essentially everyone went to church, even unbelievers like Thomas Jefferson.  I believe we should be good pilgrims in the world–transformed from the world, not conformed to the world.  Our church may be small, but I believe it is more like what God wants the church to be.

What we are about here:

We realize that our church is kind of like a dinosaur among the churches of Southern California.  We don’t have a zippy contemporary name–like “Streams in the Desert” or “Living Word.”   In fact, we don’t even have a contemporary praise band either.  Why not?

Well, we are not the judges of the world, nor even the judges of Southern California.  But in our opinion the culture and morality of our World and Nation are definitely going downhill.  God calls His people to be good witnesses as Strangers and Pilgrims in this world–not to be conformed to the World, but to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ.  So what was Jesus like?

  1. Holy (He never even sinned once)
  2. Loving (He even loved his enemies)
  3. Meek (He never boasted)
  4. A preacher of Repentance (From the beginning–Matthew 4)
  5. Courageous (He always spoke the truth, and trusted in God the Father)

Let’s strive to be these kinds of Christians.
